Every member of our Guild is invited to contribute to Community Service.

Each year we donate quilts, Christmas Stockings, pillowcases, and other items to organizations that help children, teenagers and adults in transition. We donate to pediatric units in hospitals, and to other charitable organizations dear to the hearts of our members.

Members may make any of the above items at home using their own stash, or at each Guild meeting may pick up kits that include fabric, batting and a pattern.

They may also attend workshops organized for cutting and sewing with friends. Contact Vera Dowling at 916-988-3459 for further information.

Special Project: Necessity Bag Pillows

Soft, squishy eleven-inch pillows are used during the mastectomy recovery process to help support the breast and arm areas, particularly if lymph gland removal has taken place. The pillows are very easily constructed (cutting, sewing, stuffing could be accomplished in 20 minutes!) and are included in Necessity Bags. They should be simple (with no linings or zippers) and stuffed very sparingly so that they are soft and cushy! All sewing is done by machine. Any happy, cheery fabrics might be suitable for one of these pillows. Turn them into Community Service at a guild meeting. Here are instructions for making Necessity Bags.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE BREAST CANCER PINK RIBBON FABRICS.

Sutter Breast Cancer Auction

Many of our members donated quilts to the Sutter Cancer Center's Breast Cancer Quilt Auction.

The fourth Quilt Auction will be held in November 2008. This is the schedule:

Many of the quilts were shown on the Breast Cancer auction web site , along with information about the auction and how to bid on a quilt.

The idea originated in 1999 when the River City Quilters Guild and Sutter Cancer Center co-sponsored a quilt auction that raised more than $57,000. In 2002 the auction raised over $110,000. The 720 quilts auctioned in 2005 raised over $150,496 for the Sutter breast cancer research and treatment programs.
